Formel 1 is one of the best bands that ever has come from the East German Republic/DDR. The play classic type of heavy metal and besides their own material they play cover with well known bands like Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden. Two bands that sounds a lot like Formel 1. Unfortunately the band only released a very hard to find vinyl single and the classic lp ‘Live Im Stahlwerk’ in the mid 80s both on the East German label Amiga. The band also appeared on several compilation albums only released in DDR. The German label Immortal Vinyl have done a beautiful work and released this 5 LP box set with more material than anyone outside the band probably thought it even existed. The box includes 17 of the 18 tracks the band ever recorded in a studio. The missing track ‘Tramperleid’ from 1982 were impossible to track down. The box also includes unreleased demo tracks, a complete 60 minutes live recording from Lehnitz 1985 and various live rarities recorded between 1984 and 2000. The fifth album offers a 50 minutes extract from the last ever gig the band did in 1987 at the Limbach-Oberfrohna before they split up. This last live recording includes some rare tracks but the sound however isn’t that good and sounds more like an old 80s bootleg tape. However you should see this last disc as a pure bonus as the studio material alone is worth the price of the box. You will also find a 12 page booklet with historic facts, three interviews, complete discography, rare photos and so on.
