Talking about some nearly classic death metal bands, in my opinion it’s rightfully to mention Finlands Funebre. Just like many other death metal bands coming from European death metal territory in the late of the 80s, Funebre’s absorbed most of their influences from the Swedish death metal scene back then, letting such bands as Nihilist / Entombed, Carnage, Dismember, Grave and the likes, be the strongest influences for the band musically. They managed to leave two demos Cranial Torment in 89 and 3-song Demo 90 and only one album behind them before they split up for good 1991. However, Funebre’s reputation to the whole Finnish death metal scene was remarkable and they were undeniably a very influential death metal band for many extreme metal bands that popped up in the Finnish Metal scene during the 90s since the band was formed – and even after when they ceased to exist. Unquestionably they influenced more new death metal bands in Finland back in the day than one could possibly imagine in the first place. Along with such bands as Abhorrence, Amorphis, Xysma, Disgrace, Convule and Sentenced. The album Cranial Torment features the bands two demos and their debut demo was recorded when death metal was virtually unknown and only available if you wrote to the band. The over the top bottom heaviness of this is mind blowing. The vocals are straight out of a horror movie and while being self produced the sound quality is actually amazing. From the opening track Cranial Torment to the last it is as brutal and heavy as anything possibly ever recorded from this time period. This is right up there with Winter’s Into Darkness and Celtic Frost’s early stuff. It is the perfect mix of doom death and speed that takes you straight to hell every time you listen to it. A year later the band released their second demo and its in the same brutal style, but maybe there are a few more doom parts and some more technical ones. Let’s say that they grew from the point of view of the musicianship, just to beware the readers that I’m not talking about technical death metal. It’s pure gore/death with malignant riffs an hyper guttural vocals. Overall, this album is essential if youre into rotten music. So recommended to fanatics of morbid sonorities.
