Since its first release in 2010, Ashen Eidolon has become one of the top faves of many Atmospheric Black Metal fans. The album displays a clear influence from early Agalloch and can easily be compared to other names in the melodic black/folk realm such as Winterfylleth, Falls Of Rauros, Falkenbach, and Wodensthrone. However, it is clear upon first listen that despite these similarities, Gallowbraid is certainly its own unique entity. Jake Rogers, also in Visigoth, has a masterful talent for melody and composition and additionally Ashen Eidolon proves him to be a capable musician and vocalist. Mr Rogers knows how to bring back a musical motif in a way that is just plain pleasing to the ears. The mixture of folk with black metal on Ashen Eidolon is excellent and few other bands in the genre have done it so well. All the components fit together like a jigsaw puzzle – every element feels like it was made specifically for the others. It is really a must-have for fans of the genre and a great starting point for those interested what good black/folk metal sounds like.
