Description

Formed by ex-In Flames and Engel guitarist Nicklas Engelin, Gardenian (like his former outfit) falls into the textbook definition of the Gothenburg sound, a relatively accessible brand of progressive death metal. After an indie album titled ‘Six Feet Stand’, Gardenian signed with Nuclear Blast and issued ‘Soulburner’ in mid-1999, which helped the band build a stateside following. ‘Soulburner’ tones down the group’s previous death-metal orientation somewhat, with more intelligible vocals and snatches of melody here and there. This actually helps add to the impression of the band’s power, and although it isn’t quite as progressive as one might expect from an In Flames side project, the more straight-ahead approach serves the record well.
