Description
During the pinnacle of black metal there were a bunch of black metal bands emerging suddenly out from nowhere, all bearing similar imagery, idealism, and aesthetics. In most cases, particularly in Norway, the bands had either broken loose from their past death metal efforts, or were just forming from scratch, creating or attempting to create this relatively new style of music, for very similar reasons. Most if not all of the earliest bands writing this style are very well known today, because of the fact that they basically reconstructed the 80’s first wave into an entire new form of black metal. However, some of the bands that came a few years later were just too late for the initial explosion, but not too late to be considered third wave rip-offs. Stavanger band Gehenna are one of those bands. ‘Gehenna’ is the word for jewish hell or purgatory. The second album was released in 1995 and this is one of thoose albums that grows considerably in appeal for every listening. Within the mayhem of their chaos exists a multi-layered musical composition that does truly give you the chance to hear something new nearly every time. Gehenna also realizes that a good old fashioned metal riff should not be ignored, as the very smart guitar line at the beginning of ‘A Myth’ demonstrates. There indeed is a lot of common ground with other Cacophonous artists, including ofcourse Dimmu Borgir. Gehenna however doesn't allow a huge amount of the overzealous need to let keyboards dominate into the songwriting process. Instead, the intelligent production, memorable yet harsh songs and old fashioned talent make this an above average record that just grabs you and transports you to a place where the dead walk in silence forever, and your soul is no longer a part of you.
