Black metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed by Gaahl (Kristian Espedal) and King ov Hell (Tom Visnes) following their departure from Gorgoroth after a name dispute lawsuit. Initially God Seed existed from March 2009 to July 2009 before Gaahl decided to retire from the metal scene. The band reunited again in 2012, but was put to rest in August 2015. Fans of Gaahls years in Gorgoroth shouldnt be dissapointed with God Seed’s only studio album, I Begin. The songwriting style does not greatly differ from Gorgoroth, but the approach certainly does. One of the great standout point of this album is the keyboard parts, played by Geir Bratland. Normally keyboards and synths in black metal tend to either be symphonic sounding or have a creepy gothic organ sound to them. On I Begin I’d say at times the keys and synths have further reaching sounds more akin to the types of sounds you would find in things like kraut-rock, psychedelic rock and even post-punk. It’s very cool. Fear not, though! There are blast beats, loud and hectic black metal guitars and all the things you would also come to expect from 2 former members of Gorgoroth. This is a black metal record, it jsut happens to be one that takes chances in all the right ways and comes out all the better for it. Gaahl’s vocals are the best I’ve ever heard them sound on this release. Crank this up and praise Satan!
