Description
Guns N Roses performed at the Mannheim Open Air Festival in Germany on the 24th of August 1991 together with Skid Row and Nine Inch Nails. The bandn opens with Welcome To The Jungle, such a great opening and the 70,000 people in the audience were instantly on their feet. Onstage it was the usual sight. Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan hovering either side of the drum riser barely moving and throwing the odd shape, but nevertheless delivering the tightest rhythm possible. Meanwhile Slash and Axl were charging around as if they were being paid by the mile instead of by the hour. Axl is the one who’s always up to something new. Today he was charmingly bedecked in a kilt and you can bet your life that it won’t be long before we start seeing leather kilts gracing our stages as Axl clones copy him. And then it happened… and people are slowly getting accustomed to Guns N’ Roses little foibles. Twenty minutes into the show and Axl wandered offstage. The rest of the band looked a bit confused, but then, as one, they sauntered off backstage. So what was it this time? What reason had Guns N Roses found to get precious about? Well, actually they did have a pretty good reason and that was that the monitors had decided to pack in and there’s no way a band member can hear what another band member is doing on the other side of a stage without a monitor mix. Fair enough… but it’s becoming a bit of a habit isn’t it? Axl returned later and continued the show. According to Slash and Duff, the promoters prevented Axl from leaving the arena, forcing him back onto the stage, and a riot was prevented. Back on stage the band rip up with Civil War and Double Talkin Jive. At the end of the night the band delivered Estranged but there was one song off Appetite For Destruction that the band were waiting for and that was Paradise City. The crowd instinctively knew that it couldn’t get better and that the show was finally over. In spite of the odd hiccup, this was an event and not just a concert. Guns N Roses are, without a shadow of a doubt, a living legend and you can’t say more than that. For every hour however that the band played over ten p.m Mannheim charged a $140,000 in fine and Guns N Roses played their last chord at about eleven p.m. So this was a good affair for this German town. However Izzy Stradlin started to get fed up with all this band problems and delays and he would only stay for one more show before he finally called it a day.
