Patience, a track taken from the Lies album, was released as a single in 1989. The song peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is played using three acoustic guitars and was recorded in a single session by producer Mike Clink. The music and lyrics were both written by Izzy Stradlin. The motivation for the track is generally accepted to be the troublesome relationship between Axl Rose and now ex-wife Erin Everly, though this was never stated in the album or interviews. According to bass guitarist Duff McKagan, Axl came up with a great lyric, seemingly out of nowhere, that of course became the story and melody of that song. It has also been stated by the band that Izzy wrote the song about his ex-girlfriend Angela Nicoletti McCoy, but it may simply be about failed relationships in general. The B-side Rocket Queen is also, like most of the tracks on Appetite For Destruction, about a girl that Axl Rose was infatuated with. This girl wanted to start a band and she had a name for the band, they would be called Rocket Queen. As a tribute to her and her rock n roll dream, Rose wrote the song of the same name, and when it came time to record the song, Rose decided that what would truly make the song’s bridge sing would be a few orgiastic moans. Now, anyone else would probably get one of their mates in there and try to fake it, probably to howls of hysterical laughter. However, Rose, ever the control freak, knew that it had to sound legit. Thus, he cast an eye over the groupies hanging around the band. Adriana Smith, who’d been spending a lot of time with drummer Steven Adler, caught his eye. Adler had been loudly insisting that Smith wasn’t his girlfriend, so Rose reasoned that if he had sex with her in the vocal booth, recorded it and put it on Rocket Queen, no one would have a problem with it, right? Right?! Yeah, turns out a lot of people did. Smith was mortified to learn that her moans had actually made it onto Rocket Queen. Adler was apoplectic that Rose had not only had sex with his on-again-off-again girlfriend but let the whole world know about it. Who could be surprised, though? Guns N’ Roses were, after all, neither good, nice nor respectful. At least 30 million people have purchased a copy of the album and have heard Adriana Smiths orgasmic moaning in the background of Rocket Queen and then you can ad all the digital downloads of the track.
