Munich, Germany’s Heaven Shall Burn specialize in highly controversial and politicized death metal fused with hardcore; a hybrid style often referred to as deathcore. Combining their militant defences of social concerns (racism, corruption, animal cruelty, veganism, etc.) with a seemingly boundless metallic wrath, the group’s brutalizing sonic onslaught has drawn comparisons to traditional death metal bands like England’s Bolt Thrower, as well as the less regimented, but equally emphatic work of Sweden’s the Haunted. Following a set of demos, the band recorded a 1998 mcd entitled In Battle There Is No Law. Yes in their early years they took their respect and worship for Bolt Thrower and brass knuckled it into their love. In the early years this band was a more pounding and riffier beast, with vocalist Marcus Bischoff monosyllabically shredding his throat in “banshee strop” mode as opposed to cookie monster growling. As the sands have tumbled through the hourglass, Bischoff’s voice has maintained the brutality, but he’s developed a wider and deeper range, and the band has matured in their utilization of populist grooves and walls of layered guitar melodies that, more often than not, have Maik Weichert and Alexander Dietz diverging from what they actually play as a unit to converge and collapse onto classy passages that offer a greater degree of dynamism.
