Hellripper is a one-man black/speed metal band from Scotland. Complete and Total Fucking Mayhem is a compilation of all of the Hellripper work so far. This includes The Manifestation Of Evil, a split with Batsheva, a three-way split with Acid Cross and Kreigg, and finally a split with Fetid Zombie called Prophecies Of Ruin. All tracks have been remastered for this release. In some ways the title of this release serves as a pretty good review for its contents, although I suppose that does imply there’s less control and focus here than there actually is. The songs are raw, underground, ugly and primitive, but they’re structured well and are surprisingly catchy and addictive for this kind of thing. Think of a black metal version/mix of Kreator, Motörhead, Impaled Nazarene and Audiopain. Believe it or not, it actually is as good as it sounds! My mildly incredulous tone comes from the fact that I find a lot of black/thrash to be lacking, in all honestly. However, I do really quite enjoy the work of Hellripper. Considering that the brains behind the band is also a member of the very talented and rather atypical Rats of Reality, I shouldn’t be surprised I suppose. With songs that are short, simple, nastily infectious and delivered with attitude, this 29 minutes is the audio equivalent of diving into a box of barbed wire and serrated knives, all done with a maniacal grin on your face.
