Hex is a black metal act from El Salvador and their debut demo Cursed Chalice emerged in 2010. This 4 piece act got the help and assistance of Julio Rodas in the recording studio to get a professional sound without compromising the unspoken rawness of the genre and the band’s violent approach. The opening track Invocation (Of Fathomless Evil) introduces us to the devastating Eligos guitar riffs that form the spearhead of Hex’s music, with the well-known tremolo picking style, he plays sequences that can be clearly discerned. There are some short melodic sections scattered throughout the songs and Poser Slaughtercult has a short solo that fits well within the perspective of the album. Voices are performed by Krieger, mostly in a ragged, high-pitched style with occasional growls. This adds elements to the dark ensemble that makes up the band, this darkness reaches its peak with The Sign, with vocals of a more throaty style. The lyrics are understandable, and carefully composed with deep malevolence and fury. Even though the songs have the classic verse-chorus-verse structure, it is a very dynamic but coherent album, from start to finish, the songs blend well with each other. This demo wanders along musical paths already known to many others, but the sound of its footsteps is unique in its own way. This is a demo but anyone, with an ear trained to recognize it as something valuable, will know how to appreciate it.
