Hole recorded live at the Patriot Center in Fairfax. Virginia Usa on the 5th of December 1998. This night was a five band line-up and it was called the WHFS-Mas Holiday Nutcracker. This excellent night started with the funky Soul Coughing. Followed by Cake and Everlast. The ending the night with Hole and Garbage. Garbage might have been the headliner on paper. Lead singer Shirley Manson was known for being a stage star with considerable charisma. But the second Courtney Love swaggered onstage, in tight leather pants cut Marilyn Monroe style, it was clear that Manson would have a hard time trying to be the star of the night. In all honesty probably even Santa Claus himself would have a hard time following Courtney Love in Fairfax. The band opened up with the title track and Awful from their new pop rock album Celebrity Skin. After that Love lit a cigarette, tossed her lighter into the crowd and sang Miss World from the punk grunge album Live Through This – one of the best rock albums of the ’90s. Love next sang Reasons To Be Beautiful, Dying from the new album, before returning to Hole’s previous album when Erlandson, bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur and drummer Patty Schemel ripped through a devastating version of Violet. The show continued with the fine Malibu before Hole played Pretty On The Inside, the title track of their first album, which required Courtney to channel her old screeching self and yell some prophetic lyrics “Is she rotten on the inside, ugly from the back? There is no power like my pretty power”. They wrapped up a 45 minute set with two more songs off the new album, Heaven Tonight and Boys On The Radio. Then they came back to play two more songs for an encore. First, they played Northern Star, a reflective ballad from Celebrity Skin and then they finished the show with Doll Parts
