In the summer of 1988 punk rock icon Iggy Pop released his eighth studio album Instinct. His previous album, Blah Blah Blah, was a minor hit album and his record label wanted more of the same. Instead Iggy Pop decided to go for a more heavy metal / hardrocking sound for this album and inviting Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones to co write four of the tracks on the album. The first single from the album, Cold Metal, charted at number 37 on mainstream rock charts and earned Pop a Grammy Award nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal performance in 1989. Except for a few plays of Cold Metal the album was largely ignored by commercial rock radio. The song was also briefly played in the 1990 science fiction-horror film Hardware, which also featured Iggy Pop as the voice of Angry Bob, a radio DJ. Maybe it wasnt a hit among the punk fans or among the record label bosses but Kerrang ranked the album as number 69 on their 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time list.
