Behind the somewhat cryptic name In Slaughter Natives hides Jouni Havukainen from Linköping. He has played under a number of names since 1980, but when he released his first tape on the likewise Linköping-based Cold Meat Industry in 1989, the name In Slaughter Natives was nailed down. The name can be loosely translated to something like “ongoing slaughter of indigenous people”. The English composition is not really grammatically correct, but usually only Swedes complain. The actual meaning behind the name has only emerged in hindsight, Jouni says, referring to today’s oppression of indigenous cultures, people who seem to have forgotten where they themselves come from. He has previous played with Seven Sessions, Lärjungar På Vandring as well as being bassplayer in various punk and rock bands, and he confirms his broad musical tastes by naming country musician Johnny Cash as one of his favourites. Industrial music was fairly unknown in the early 90s and both In Slaughter Natives and the Linköping-based record label Cold Meat Industry were both among the pioneers of the genre. The Re-Enter Salvation box set features the bands first four album and an exclusive fifth disc consisting of rare live, demo and unreleased recordings. The general industrial music lover could probably spend their money on other things instead of bying this for that rare bonus cd but for the fan of the band its a nice gift and a must have.
Cd 1: In Slaughter Natives 1989
Back in 1989 when In Slaughter Natives released their self titled debut album, as a limited cassette only, not many took notice. But time and history has given the band the credit they deserve. Likewise in hindsight it can be acknowledged that In Slaughter Natives were a precursor the ‘martial industrial’ genre, although their trademark orchestral industrial doom has stood out from and has not been replicated by the majority of projects of a ‘martial industrial’ style (which are predominantly influenced by early to mid-20th century history and era). Thus In Slaughter Natives stand apart with their distinctive and recognisable neo-classical compositions, which articulate a hellish atmosphere of religious laments and amounts to a sonic representation of purgatorial damnation. Their music is a mix of heavy electronics, martial percussions, religious chants, orchestral samples and gruesome demonic vocals. Jouni personally thinks that the album was a bit “basic”, as he himself puts it. Regarding the controversial Front 242 sample in the song “Then Gothic”, he explains that Front themselves did not use the sample properly. Familiar samples from Cassandra Complex also appear on the disc, but this is pure bad luck, both groups recorded the same TV show.
Cd 2: Enter Now The World 1992
Today its impossible to talk about the history of industrial music without mentioning In Slaughter Natives. They were one of the pioneering bands in the symphonic industrial field. Bands like Sophia, Von Thronstahl and the like all owes a lot to In Slaughter Natives but mastermind Jouni Havukainen almost buries everyone else with this apocalyptic album called ‘Enter Now The World’ from 1992. This is a mixture of martial industrial with electronic hints, powerful symphonic and lyrical flights (samples of brass, strings and opera songs) and ambient with deep, rasping vocals. Everything is good on this album and at the same time its unhealthy and devastating. Enter Now The World is no less than a masterpiece, an obligatory album to check out for any amateur of industrial music. In Slaughter Natives captures the listener’s attention within seconds and afterwards you feel abandon, alone and lobotomized.
Disc 3: Sacrosancts Bleed 1992
Nowadays, every other group in Central Europe boldly beats the drums and tells something sad and mournful, aiming for the territory of the popular martial industrial. However, in the 90s, the idea of making music in this vein occurred to far fewer people, and the In Slaughter Natives project is considered one of the pioneers of the genre. Its sound can already be recognized as classic: in addition to militarized percussion, you can often hear electronics that are heavy in spirit and atmosphere, gothic church chorales and some otherworldly voices, generously scattered here and there. Their third album, the 1992 album Sacrosancts Bleed, is one of their most offensive albums. Its evil and aggressive, emphasizing dark industrial elements such as hammer beats and noise rather than neoclassical elements. Lead man Jouni Havukainen had even written some death metal-like songs that he wanted to release, even though they didn’t quite fit in. He thought for a while about using a real guitar, but decided that a sampled ditto was a better fit. Just listen tot he opening track, Chaos Breeding, it features some heavy metal guitar work and wild percussions and an even wilder agonizing vocal work of frontman Havukainen. Sacrosancts Bleed is on a high level when it comes to dark ambient industrial music. This is intense and In Slaughter Natives sounds leaves no thoughts behind. This is not the kind of music Sweden is famous for. So if you want music to dance or/and sing to then try Abba. This is not music its an industrial ritual so be careful and be prepared.
Disc 4: Purgate My Stain 1996
With Purgate My Stain the band refined their kind of gothic music for slow tempos, transcendent drones, ghostly choirs, symphonic electronics and visions of satanic monasteries. The album introduces a more atmospheric/ambient element to the bands sound. This is a barnstorming tour de force of sizzling and blazing black ambient music that you could fry an egg on it. The man behind In Slaughter Natives is back with a vengeance. Like most albums by the band it isnt an easy experience for the listener. Demonic intoning voice, relentless drum patterns and samples that crashes like a hurricane battering a coastline all makes this album so dark and foreboding that it should come with a health warning sticker on the front for those faint hearted amongst you. Never has textured black ambiance sounded so good or meaty.
