Description

Infernal Torment from Silkeborg was formed in 1992 and became an important part of the 1990s Death Metal scene in Denmark. They toured with the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Vader and Suffocation but still managed to stay rather unknown for the world outside of Denmark. Their second album Birthrate Zero was released in 1997 and it has a ton of groovy, technically skilled melodic down tuned death metal. All the cuts display some excellent soloing, interesting time changes, and some parts that sound really good and most of them are very catchy. The solos fit the rhythms and are well thought-out. “F**k The Whales” caught my ear the most because it uses its main riff just enough. It is easily the best song on the album. The band has also recorded a cover version of Iron Maiden’s “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son”, importing a power metal vocalist for the chorus, and left it as a hidden bonus track for the listener to find. So are there any downsides to this album well, some songs occasionally tend to plod along a bit for a little too long, for example opener The Razor Twist which is a decent nimble pace, then the following track Product of Society is a slower affair. Not slower enough to make the contrast work just slower to make it seem almost like treading water. Another issue might be that singer Scott Jensen sometimes sounds a bit to monotone. But overall this isn’t at all a bad album, sure it’s not amazing or particularly unique but it’s definitely an enjoyable listen.
