What better way to start the year with Iron Maiden’s third visit to Chile. Much better promoted than the previous visits (even with MTV advertising). This time the band has brought with them a spectacular set design. Upon entering the enclosure (after the endless queues that provide material for a separate review), the two towers were imposing that simulated to be the enormous front of a castle, guarded by the classic figure that embodies death: a hooded being with a scythe of industrial proportions; In addition, we were able to observe two giant screens – great idea – on each side of the stage. All this without considering the multiplicity of scenic elements (lights, curtains, Eddies…) that would appear later. After a long and hot wait, at 8 o’clock Witchblade would come on stage but its almost impossible to support Maiden and try to reach out. Night began to fall and the wait for the maiden became eternal. Until at 9.15 the appearance of Nicko McBrain started the show. Four hits to the cymbals and the rest of the band came out on stage with the Dance Of Death single, Wildest Dreams. True, the “I’m on my way” from the 20,000 or so attending throats didn’t sound as loud and ecstatic as The Wicker Man’s “your time will come” from 3 years ago, but at that point it didn’t matter: Maiden was here now and they were ready to give us a world-class show. In addition, the camera changes of the giant screens (really remarkable) gave a plus to the performance of the band on stage. Harris’s classic bass sound kicked off Wrathchild, the first of the night’s classic tracks. At that point some conclusions could already be drawn: the show, although it did not sound perfect, sounded much better than in the same part of 2001. After a few more tracks the band goes into 40 minutes of material from the new album. And I must admit that there are some masterful moments during these tracks. With Dance Of Death Bruce really stole the show. After an intro that does not appear on the studio album (an excerpt from Hamlet “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio”), Dickinson would don a mask and cape to tell this story that “chills the bones”, as the lyrics say. Bruce plays with his image in a masterful way, creating a simply remarkable atmosphere, ending with the hood on, like death. One of the best I’ve ever seen. We have material from X-factor and Brave New World mixed with massive live favorites like Hallowed Be Thy Name and Fear Of The Dark and the massive Eddie figure which Maiden promised to bring to South America next time, and boy did they deliver. For the encores the three guitarists enters the stage and sit down to play acoustic guitar and does an amazing version of Journeyman. It didn’t take many seconds until, as the roadies finished removing the acoustic instruments, The Number Of The Beast’s “Woe to you, O earth and sea …” caused the widespread delusion and then the show ends with another all-time classic, Run To The Hills. It’s true, that the show was shorter compared to 2001 but this time around the band had this massive stage show with them and finally Chile was able to enjoy it big time and it was truly a remarkable show. This was a pleasure and an honor, thank you Iron Maiden.
