Guitar hero Jimi Hendrix has a special association with the Royal Albert Hall, with the venue being the site of some of his most notable British gigs, including The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s final European concert. Jimi’s virtuosic guitar had propelled their debut Are You Experienced? to No. 2 in the charts, and the England was quickly becoming addicted to the band’s psychedelic, rainbow blues sound. Jimi Hendrix did his debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 1967. Two years later, a more musically mature The Jimi Hendrix Experience returned. The band’s two gigs, on 18 and 24 February 1969, would be their first and final headline performances at the Hall and unfortunately the last shows in Europe. This album features material from the show from 24th of February, a show that The Jimi Hendrix Experience sold out easily supported by Van Der Graaf Generator and Fat Mattress. Tensions had been growing between band members and management for several months, but these were put aside for these Albert Hall concerts, which would be remembered as some of the band’s best and most successful late performances. This night Hendrix included his blues song Red House into the setlist. Hendrix’s music roused the crowd, inciting a near riot when he threatened to leave the stage at the end of his set: The crowd then went absolutely berserk and shouted for more for about 4-5 minutes. Some people started to leave as it didn’t look as though they were coming back, but they did and then they went absolutely… ­ well, there is no word for it! People were dancing in the aisles, Jimi went mad with the atmosphere and they did Purple Haze and Wild Thing.
