Description

German 1976 press on Atlantic records

If there is a single quality that defines the career of German pianist, composer, producer, and painter Joachim Kühn, it is curiosity. His style crisscrosses classical music, avant-jazz, post-bop, modern composition, stride blues, free improvisation, global folk traditions, and even rock. His mercurial approach balances vehemence and sensitivity, imagination, and a fluid sense of dynamics. His 1975 album Springfever had one of those cover artworks that could get any guy interested. Before internet the cover artwork was the first thing that caught your eye and interest. You can go back and watch your record collection and you will notice how many of those artworks actually lead to you to wonderful musical discoveries. This album is jazz but also very funky and odd. When you have an opening tune that goes along for 10 minutes then you feel like you have a jazz jam in a weird early Zappa way. Kuhn plays keyboards here, but electric piano keyboard when solo time comes, the bass is an electric bass of course. Jazz, funk and fusion makes it a great album of its era. This album surely deserves attention cause it has deep musical values. The ambient the music creates is mellow sometimes but hard edge in other moments and in general the attention is always very high. Overall it’s impressive, really. You have to check out this one.
