The Norwegian quartet Kal-El is the fuzzed-out step-child of hard rock and heavy metal, often with hints of pyschedelic and blues rock as well as doom metal. Songs typically feature a bass-heavy groove, detuned guitars and mind-expanding lyrics and its fair to say that Kal-El’s fifth full-length is easily their most elaborate outing yet. Its eight tracks reach sprawling eight to ten-minute lengths that culminate to an hour-long experience, far eclipsing the runtime of albums past. Their spaced-out Stoner Metal sound reaches its greatest heights yet with Dark Majesty. They take their rightful place beside Kyuss, Monster Magnet, High On Fire and the other masters of that sandy pantheon.
