Released in conjunction with the launch of their European ‘Night Is The New Day’ tour, Katatonia’s The Longest Year is an interesting EP with a lot to offer. Solid Heart is an exclusive track for this EP. It’s essentially a demo Jonas Renske was working on prior to the Night Is The New Day sessions that he cleaned up for this EP. It’s a slower, tranquil song that’s very melancholy and undeniably Katatonia. Day And Then The Shade as well as Idle Blood are remixed versions of The Night Is The New Day songs. The EP also features a pair of video clips (for the songs “The Longest Year” and “Day And Then The Shade”) that are really well done, and liner notes with a message from Jonas Renske. How essential The Longest Year EP is depends on what kind of Katatonia fan you are. If you want everything the band has to offer – remixes and all – then it’s a pretty essential purchase.
