Kiss stated in the press that they were reborn and re-focused with their inspired 1992 release Revenge, in which the quartet finally dropped their 80s pop-metal and got back to their heavy metal roots of the 70s. The ensuing tour saw the band reach deep back into their catalogue, playing songs they hadn’t performed on stage in years. And while the 1993 concert home video Konfidential doesn’t feature many of these uncommon tracks, all of the hits are present, as Simmons and Stanley perform alongside lead guitarist Bruce Kulick and new drummer Eric Singer (the first and last time this line-up would tour behind a new studio album). Such unmasked-era faves as Lick It Up, Heaven’s On Fire, and Unholy are performed alongside the grease-paint classics Deuce, Creatures Of The Night and I Love It Loud. Added in the middle is a quartet of archival performances from the original Kiss line-up: 100,000 Years, Nothin’ To Lose, Hotter Than Hell and Let Me Go Rock N Roll, the latter including a hilarious clip of Simmons flubbing the words at the beginning. While there’s no denying that the original Kiss line-up was the best, this early-90s version was just as good (if not better) than the majority of other heavy metal bands at the time, as proven on Konfidential. This dvd also features the X-Treme Close-Up video, released back in 1992. While it duplicates the same format as its predecessor – interviews are mixed in with promo videos and live clips – it is a much better compilation since it does not contain those unfunny skits that plagued Exposed. Over 33 clips are featured, but the majority are only excerpts, which makes it kind of frustrating after a while. The interviews are often insightful and interesting, as Simmons and Stanley take the viewer through a guided tour of Kisstory from the very beginning up to 92, but just like their previous home video, former band members aren’t interviewed, so you don’t get to hear their side of the story. And while most are truncated versions, such clips as Black Diamond (76), Cold Gin (75), Calling Dr. Love (83), and Watchin You (75)” are all strong. You’ll also find such rarities as overseas promo clips (I Was Made For Lovin You, Sure Know Something) and 70’s TV advertisements/news items (Kiss dolls, Kiss comics, etc.). Every era of the band is touched upon, even their then-current video/single Unholy is featured (which was a return to the heavy metal of their glory days), which makes X-Treme Close-Up a very consistent viewing experience, unlike Exposed.
