Kiss recorded live on December 8, 2019 at Xebio Arena in Sendai, Japan. This show was the first on the Japanese leg of the End Of The Road tour and also the first as a four-piece since the band was forced to cancel its tour of Australia and New Zealand after frontman Paul Stanley was diagnosed with a bad case of the flu. Stanley told The Sydney Morning Herald that End Of The Road was Kiss’s victory lap. It’s us celebrating everything we created with our audience and with our fans, he explained. It’s that time for people who’ve been with us over the years to come and celebrate all that we’ve had together. There’s people who’ve never seen us before and they’re leaving the show and thinking, Why didn’t I come to this earlier?’ It’s terrific. Asked why he thinks Kiss has endured this long, while other bands have fallen by the wayside, Stanley said: People who experience Kiss really are affected by it in a way that goes beyond it being a rock band. It’s fascinating and amazing to be at these shows nightly and see parents and grandparents who want their offspring to experience what they experienced. It’s far beyond typical rock bands, where you hate the idea of your little brother being there, or your neighbor. Kiss is an amazing tribe and it’s incredibly gratifying. Kiss opens the show with three classic songs from the 1970s: Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud and Deuce and the crowd goes wild. The show is over-the-top with lights, pyro, smoke, confetti, oversized balloons, fire breathing, blood spitting and band members ziplining over the audience and being lifted up and down, in and out, throughout the show. The setlist is somewhat predictable but outstanding. The show is more than two hours long and it is a great way for the band to say farewell to its Japanese fans. Yes, Kiss is a circus, an over-the-top extravaganza. But they also have great songs and performance skills to back that up. The complete package is outstanding. 46 years into the band’s career, Kiss is still going strong, very strong.
