Description

Triple blue vinyl set in a trifold gatefold sleeve. Limited to 400 numbered copies

In October of 1989 Kiss released their 15th studio album, and one of their longest, Hot In The Shade. A few months later it was certified Gold (December 20th) and the pop ballad that Forever, that was written by Paul Stanley together with Michael Bolton, reached #8 on the Billboard charts, the band’s highest charting single in the US since “Beth”, 13 years earlier. It all looked good for the upcoming The Hot In The Shade World Tour (also dubbed the H.I.T.S. Tour) that started on the 11th of March 1990 with 3 warm-up shows before the main arena tour started on the 4th of May. The band had a huge stage set up that were dominated by a large sphinx nicknamed Leon, mirroring the cover of Hot In The Shade. As the houselights dimmed, a humming sound would be heard from the speakers, while Leon opened his mouth and let hundreds of thin laser beams out. The laser curtain concept had originally been developed for the Dynasty Tour, but it had not worked properly and was discarded after the first show of that tour. As Leon’s mouth opened fully, Kiss would be revealed standing in silhouette, in the midst of laser beams. There was no “You wanted the best, you got the best” introduction on this tour; Kiss would emerge from directly beneath the Sphinx to dramatic entrance music, walk down onto the stage and open the show with “I Stole Your Love” and a fireworks display. However, for the first few shows of the tour in Texas, Stanley would say “What do you say we kick some ass?!” before launching into the opening song. This intro was dropped by the Kansas City, Kansas show on May 9th. This tour featured many songs from the band’s 1970’s heyday that hadn’t been performed in years. As i said the band were out touring and promoting a great selling album featuring a massive single hit with a huge set stage and lots of classic material in the set list. However the tour didnt become the success the band had planned and the average attendance for the tour was 6 600 visitors and no shows outside Northern America was performed. This triple vinyl was recorded at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona on the 16th of September 16th 1990, were Slaughter and Winger had been the opening act. This below is from an interview with Paul done a month earlier on the 16th of August. Paul Stanely: Before this tour we felt real strongly that we wanted to do a ‘Kiss Show’. And I mean that all in capital letters. Nowadays it’s easy to see a Kiss show. The only thing missing is Kiss. We just figured ‘hell, why not do what no one else can do?’ That was the goal and this show, every time I see it, and every time I’m out there, it feels like home. It feels like your favourite pair of cowboy boots. It just feels like it fits right. I really have a tremendous drive and commitment to seeing Kiss achieve some thing that we haven’t yet. This is by far and away the best Kiss show in the past decade. We’re doing twenty some odd songs and we’re onstage for over two hours. There’s enough pyro, lasers and smoke to cause most people’s circuits to overload. It’s pretty high intensity stuff. The interviewer: Rumours have it that the originals will do a reunion tour. Paul Stanley: Yeah, and Mickey Mantle’s gonna play for the Yankees.
