The Animalize tour was the most successful that Kiss had done since the original line-up. It was an exciting stage show including a finale with the band playing on a levitating platform over the stage and the band had found a line-up that could deliver better live than the band had done in years. Eric Carr could play things that Peter Criss couldn’t and Mark St John had been replaced by Bruce Kulick. The Animalize album sold very well and went platinum. It had some successful singles but in honesty most tracks on the album felt like fillers and Gene’s material is particularly forgettable and uninspired. Gene at the time was dead set to become a movie star and its obvious that his heart is nowhere near Kiss. Listening to Animalize is like listening to half a band where Gene didn’t even bother to play bass on several of Paul’s songs, and studio musicians were brought in to add guitar solos, drum overdubs, and backing vocals. All songs but one were co-written by outside writers. Kids who grew up with Kiss of the 80s probably thought Paul was the main guy. However one thing that makes Kiss so interesting to hear live during this period is the fact that 80s Kiss where way faster than the Kiss of the 70s. Speed was in the fashion in the mid 80s. The fast stuff from their 80s albums, like Fits Like A Glove and Young And Wasted were done faster and old songs like Detroit Rock City and Cold Gin had some added speed. Lots of old songs where dropped from the set list in favour of material from Lick It Up and Creatures Of The Night as well as new tunes like Under The Gun, Thrills In The Night and Heaven’s On Fire. You will also here drummer The Fox sing. This album was recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California on the 18th of February 1985.
