Shrinking Violet is the sixth studio album by hard rock band L.A. Guns and it was produced by Guns N Roses Gilby Clarke. It was a welcome return to a harder edged sound more back to their roots of sleazy, crunching glam metal. Ex-Love/Hate singer Jizzy Pearl adds some street grit to the music (sadly this would be the only album with Jizzy Pearl on vocals). Incorporating musical styles that stretch far beyond the Whiskey-A-Go-Go. You have some classic glam as only L.A. Guns can deliver in tracks such as Girl You Turn Me On, Shrinking Violet, I’ll Be There. You also have some churning heavy metal with searing guitar work courtesy of Tracii Guns on songs like California and Cherries. A slow blues crawl called Bad Whiskey and an ode to the roots of rock in the slow ballad Dreamtime, where Gilby Clarke adds some additional guitars. Overall its a consisten album that is surprisingly focused. Maybe it was Jizzy that was the catalyst that got the band back to sounding inspired and creative again. We can only imagine what their follow up might have sounded like if Jizzy would have remained in the group.
