Description

This is a great recording of a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert in Cardiff, Wales. In order to appreciate the album's sound, you need to remember that guitarist Ed King had left the group before this concert, which meant that guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins had to play his parts and theirs in order to weave the sound into a harmonious whole. Believe it or not, they succeeded. This was originally produced for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The sound is clean and crisp, with each instrument having it's own presence, with a mix that puts vocals and instruments in their proper place. The band is so tight, Ronnie's vocals are whiskey soaked smooth, while Artimus Pyle pounds away with Leon in lockstep rhythm. The drums of Pyle are mixed a bit forward but that feels just right here. The band had just released their third album, Nuthin Fancy, but it's interesting that the first track (Double Trouble) is one that was recorded for their fourth album. A look at the track listing will tell anyone familiar with this band what they're in for. The vocals are very intense and hard-hitting, with the band also rising to the occasion. I know the show in Cardiff was a part of the Freebird-The Movie soundtrack and i have always hoped it would come across a more complete version of it and its terribly unfortunate that 20 minutes were edited out of the show for this album, one of the tracks being Simple Man. Nevertheless, this is a great example of a band rising to the occasion in the wake of a major personnel change and anyone who likes the album One More From The Road will take to this in a heartbeat. Track listing: 1. Double Trouble 2. I Aint The One 3. The Needle And The Spoon 4. Saturday Night Special 5. Gimme Three Steps 6. Whiskey Rock A Roller 7. Call Me The Breeze 8. Sweet Home Alabama 9. Free Bird
