Description
Masque, from Leicester, England, released their vinyl only EP in 1988 and, in truth, probably 3 or 4 years too late to get the best from their musical style. Great female vocals and extremely competent musicians make for some killer tunes in an early Maiden/Chastain style. Lots of of energy and rage, very intense lyrics, a gripping atmosphere and choruses that you can’t help but sing along to. The lyrics deal with revenge, hate, madness and death. Jo Phipps has an equally intense vocal delivery, with a deep and rich voice. Nothing wrong with this effort at all except it was trying to shine in a metal world which, by then, was largely dominated by the hair metal explosion. In this environment Masque, along with others, (Slander for example) failed to break through. Of course now listeners are back tracking, finding these hidden gems and as a result original copies are worth a small fortune. This reissue is of the highest quality, featuring the original EP backed up by demo tracks from the same year. If you’re into bands like Chastain, Blacklace, Bitch or even earlier Warlock material this is a band worth checking out…..you won’t be disappointed.
