Back in 1987 the most extreme bands that metal heads were aware of were early death metal ones like Death, Possessed and Sepultura. When Mayhem started out they were influenced by that genre but they took it one step further. The band added more violence to there music and the music they created was raw with low-budget production. If this was an intention or just the lack of money and prober equiment we cant say but the end result was something new and they laid the foundation to what would become black metal. This album features the Death rehearsals recorded back on the 17th and 18th of January 1987. This rehearsals precedes Deathcrush. These rehearsals were also released by Maniac himself on tape in a very small quantity and sold at the Helvete Record Shop by Euronymous. These recordings are ofcourse a very important piece in the puzzle of the history of extreme metal and to see this released on such a beautiful digipack edition should be welcoming for all fans of the band. Death Rehearsals shows one of the very first primitive mix of early death, thrash metal and a black metal still under an embryonic form. An important lesson of history and an inspiration for lots and lots of other bands.
