So Far, So Good… So What! is probably Megadeth’s heaviest, nastiest and thrashiest hour (actually, not more than a half). The album has a cold, hate-filled sound that feels like a perfect reminiscence of the late eighties. Maybe for this reason many people seem to consider this album inferior to other Megadeth releases from that period, but in my opinion it is quite the opposite and one of Megadeth’s most intense efforts ever. Dave Mustaine rants about the PMRC, the apocalypse, ex-girlfriends, and other people he is angry with, while hinting at the depth of his substance abuse problem with 502, a paean to driving drunk. The band’s line-up was revamped prior to this release but they sound just as good as ever. The album wants to sound threatening and listening to So Far, So Good… So What generates an apocalyptic feel which I find strangely captivating.
