Despite the band’s absurd name and improbable location, Mental Hippie Blood are in fact a grunge band from Sweden. Yes, over the past few decades, the Swedes have made it a habit to ape virtually every style of American pop music with more precision than any other foreign country — and occasionally, it must be said, with superior results. Mental Hippie Blood’s debut album is an interesting blend of Soundgarden-inspired alternative metal and more traditional metal. Featuring vocalist Michael Oran, guitarists Mikael Jansson and Anders Wikstrom (from Treat), bassist Lake Skoglund, and drummer Jonas Ostman (Gotham City/Mogg), the band recorded their domestically released self-titled debut in 1992. They then signed with Metal Blade records and released 1994’s Pounds, another album that screamed Seattle all the way, worldwide before fading into obscurity.
