It is always valuable to see how a particular band changes and develops. Mephorash is a great example of such transformation. With both of their previous releases, Death Awakens and Chalice of Thagirion, the band was indubitably searching for the most suitable black metal direction. Having their musical desideratum redefined, Mephorash strikes again with their third opus – 1557 – Rites of Nullification. Very often, with this type of black metal, the band’s problem is that they try to put too much emphasis on the atmosphere, taking the actual music for granted. Mephorash proved otherwise. They raised the sizeable monument – the obelisk of pure art, exquisitely constructed of both aspects of black metal. 1557 rivets your attention from the very start with a powerful and sublime intro that takes you for a spiritual journey through the murky galaxy. The album features a number of vocalists involved into such outfits as Acherontas, Malign or Hetroertzen, to name a few. Four extended compositions clearly indicate the band’s different approach to music. It creates a form of concept album with an enigmatic story to tell. Looking for their most comfortable sound, the band expresses themselves with some doom aesthetics which give the entire album even more mystifying feel. The ritual aura comes to the foreground and it doesn’t allow you to be impervious at any point of listening to 1557. The great sound of drums makes it a fantastic addition to the album’s character. Also, the aforementioned vocalists contribute to a strikingly uniform style delivering an extra impression of symmetry. Everything reflects everything, however it is far from making you confused with Mephorash’s music. It rather overwhelms you with its magnificence and purity. Mephorash perfectly places itself on a triumphant pedestal wielding an outstanding and provocative album. The maturity they have developed over the past few years reaches the peak on song Cheidolun – Breaking the Blade of Beriah. This song alone exemplifies the band’s songwriting skill and quality. In a single phrase, a very well done album. Do not hesitate to check this piece of black art out.
