In 1991 Metallica skyrocket to fame with their black album. Enter Sandman was the first song Metallica had written for their 1991 eponymous black album and it would become their first single from the album. Initially, the song Holier Than Thou was slated to be the opening track and first single from Metallica; according to the documentary A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica, producer Bob Rock told Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield that the album has “five or six songs that are going to be classics”, not only with fans but also on the radio, and that “the first song that should come out is ‘Holier Than Thou'”. According to Rock, Ulrich was the only band member who felt, even before recording, that “Enter Sandman” was the ideal song to be the first single. Ulrich has said that there was a “big argument”; however, after explaining his point of view to the rest of the band, “Enter Sandman” eventually became the opening track and first single of the album. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and nine other countries, and sold over 22 million copies worldwide, allowing “Enter Sandman” to become, as Chris True describes it, “one of the most recognizable songs of all time in rock”. The Unforgiven is maybe one of the most beautiful songs they have ever made, up there with Fade To Black. The third single, Nothing Else Matters would become the bands best selling single ever and it hit #11 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks Charts in 1992. It is still played frequently on the radio. Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield initially wrote it to a former girlfriend, but now he cannot remember why, some say it meant that “no matter how far” he was (since Metallica spent most of their time on tours), he was still “so close” with the heart. He considered it a very personal song and was not going to publish it, but once drummer Lars Ulrich heard it he wanted it on Metallica. Now Metallica consider it a song dedicated to all their fans. Wherever I May Roam was the fourth single from Metallicas eponymous fifth album. It reached number 82 on the US Billboard Hot 100 peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart and peaked at number two in Denmark, Finland and Norway. The Live At Wembley Statdium single was recorded live at the Wembley Stadium in London, on the 20th of April 1992, at the famous Concert For Life, in honour of the late Freddie Mercury, this single, featuring three cuts from said concert, and it was released with the intention of all artist royalties going to charity. The three tracks performed was Enter Sandman, Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters songs we’ve heard countless times, from countless other recordings. But back when this was released they were all new and you can feel the energy from the band. These cd singles also features rare live, cover and demo tracks as well
