Description

Umeå’s Moloken plays an interesting mix of sludge and post-hardcore. Their third album, All Is Left To See, is something of a concept album. Focusing lyrically on “mörkrets kärna” (Swedish for “the core of darkness”), All Is Left To See examines the darker emotions of misery, depression, and paranoia. Moloken is sort of all over the place musically, but the band’s core sound can be described as a combination of abrasive sludge, post-metal, and post-hardcore. The guitars have a wide variety of sounds, including the dense, rhythmic riffs of sludge and post-metal, more cathartic ambient segments, and the jangling dissonance of post-hardcore. Cult Of Luna or Isis meets Converge isn’t too far off from a starting point. This diversity is All Is Left To See’s greatest strength and All Is Left To See is a fine album with consistently good songs, the short interludes notwithstanding. It’s a bold attempt at combining sludge and post-hardcore with a sombre tone, and it goes a pretty good job of balancing sonic heaviness with emotional depth that stops just short of being progressive or experimental, although the band has been labelled as such in the past. All Is Left To See is recommended for fans of unorthodox sludge and post-hardcore.
