Moonlight Sorcery is a Finnish black metal trio formed in early 2018. The band’s black metal is a symphonic and melodic variety by nature. Inspired by many black metal classics as well as classic heavy metal and melodic death metal and even sword and sorcery power metal, the band indeed has a huge palette of influences, which is directly reflected in the versatility of the song material. Piercing Through The Frozen Eternity, the band first EP, was worked on as the icy winds blew and winter did its magic. Drawing from the craft of genre titans like Dissection and Emperor, Moonlight Sorcery serves a grandiose array of glacial anthems which should absolutely transcend you as a listener to a world of ice and snow. I think it would be fair to say there’s a degree of influence which could be attributed to the power metal spectrum, particularly evident in some of the rhythmic shifts in Wolven Hour, but especially in the neo-classically tinged lead guitar playing which springs up throughout the four tracks, much like the best timed jump scares. Moonlight Sorcery are absolutely students of the game, and Piercing Through the Frozen Eternity effortlessly plays like a release of a more tenured band. From the arctic keyboard accents through to the maniacal drumming and Ruttomieli’s howls from the void, this one rings as absolutely authentic and sincere to me.
