Description

Black vinyl. Limited 700 copies

Germanys no.1 death metal legend Morgoth released the God Is Evil single in 2014 as a teaser for their 2015 reunion album and their return is a near carbon copy of the path taken by Autopsy or Atheist or any once-defunct death metal group whose legacy stirred it to return from beyond after the evidence of a following had become clear and convincing. The Germans put out two death metal albums, did an oddball record of industrial rock geared to sound like Killing Joke in 1995 called Feel Sorry for the Fanatic, which obviously diverted Morgoths traditional sound and was met with ire by longtime fans, and then called it a day in 1998. Fast forward to 2010 and Morgoth lives again. A few years of shows convinced the dudes to write some new material, and with God is Evil Morgoth gives the world new tunes for the first time since 1995. These two songs, preludes to Ungod, are decent; big, cadaverous slabs of bombs and blasphemy (industrial elements not included). They arent grabbing anything outside the box, but given the circumstances and Morgoths track record, thats probably a good thing. Both cuts God is Evil and Die As Deceiver each clock in at just under four minutes in length. Their nuts and bolts boil down to a primitive structuring parallel to the works of Obituary, Death, and Massacre (among others) that focuses on speed and relishes monstrous medial-speed trenches. They swing like a pendulum from straightforward death metal riffs and drum patterns heavy on the double bass (very reminiscent of Obituary) to huge mid-paced artillery raids. Marc Grewes vocals bring a lot of rot to the embryonic form of death metal Morgoth is clearly aiming for; he sounds like John Tardy, again conjuring flickers of Obituary. A discordant guitar solo would have been nice, but Im not going to take the slaying riffs and heaviness for granted. God is Evil lives up to its name. Eight minutes of solid, wicked, blitzing death metal cooked to bring out some serious neck injury and old-school carnage. A nice sample, but we want the whole meal!
