Has there ever been a more dangerous band than Motley Crue? Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, these glam rock trailblazers redefined what it is to be a rock star in a way that is still looking for an equal. Vince Neil’s vocal stylings, Mick Mars’ guitar heroics, and the rhythm section of Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee provided as much cool music as a rebellious kid could endure. However, that was just part of their charm. A significant chunk of the band’s allure came from their off-stage antics, which are almost as legendary as Motley Crue’s greatest songs. Back in 1989 and 1990 Motley hits their prime when they were out touring for the number 1 album Dr Feelgood. In the first months of 1990 the band were continuing tour Usa and at this point of the tour the band were out with Warrant as support act. Warrant had also struck gold with their debut album, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, so this was one of the hottest metal tours happening in Usa. Warrant had a huge stage production for an opening band. They had ramps and stairs and a huge ass back drop and they were actually really good live. Then came Motley Crue and they were known for bring so many amazing stage productions but this night they had it scaled down with just a drum riser and a bunch of amps and pyro. Nikki Sixx had said that they wanted to let the music do the talking. Motley Crue were just the fucking coolest band since Kiss and Alice Cooper but without the stage show it was easier to notice a few things that became more obvious during the later years like Vince Neil’s lyric skipping concept. Vince only sings every other word as he tries to catch a breath and every now and then let out a really off key screech. The set list had several tracks from their new hit album Dr. Feelgood, like Kickstart My Heart, Rattlesnake Shake, Same Ol situation and the thick sounding title track. But ofcourse material were drawn from all albums. Then it was the anticipation to see what Tommy Lee’s drum solo would be only to find out that he had an electronic kit hanging from the lights and it rode back and forth over the crowd as he played drums along with classic rock songs. Maybe not so impressive compared to later shows but still it rocked the arena because it was rare that drummers got that much attention in a bands stage show. But even though the show had its warts it was still a fun show and going back and listen to live albums from this tour is fun because it allows me to reclaim a bit of my youth as Motley Crue was the soundtrack to many good times. This one was recorded at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California on the 20th of February 1990.
