Double album on black vinyls with gatefold cover. Limited 600 copies

Mr. Big is a member of a very small community of bands that originated in the late 80s “hair metal” craze, and at the time, found a mixture of rabid fans (especially in Japan for this one) and purists who reviled them for their commercial pop sensibilities. Unlike many of those bands, they survived breakups, personnel changes, and dry spells, only to emerge as somewhat of an institution whose 2014 album with all four (Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, and Pat Torpey) original members (following 2010’s “What If”) was a welcome move. Stories We Could Tell was recorded with producer Pat Regan (Kiss, Deep Purple, Warrant, Keel). The opener, “Gotta Love This Road,” sticks close to their formula of riff-driven pop and squealing guitar solos, and might remind you a bit of Joe Lynn Turner-era Rainbow. That makes or breaks the deal right there, doesn’t it? There are the requisite “power ballads”…”The Man Who Has Everything,” “East/West,” “Just Let Your Heart Decide,” and it’s all capped off by a live version of the song that first put them on the map, “Addicted To That Rush.” The remaining 9 songs are split between mid-tempo crushers and the more speed driven, Roth-era Van Halen styled rockers. If your reason to come to the table is to hear Gilbert and Sheehan wail, you won’t be disappointed. Vocalist Eric Martin has held up well since their 1989 debut, and the songs are still a cut above the output of many bands from their old stomping grounds. It is what it is, and for Mr. Big fans, that’s more than enough.
