The New False Prophet EP has a very “raw” sound to it. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. The good part about this is it lends to the haunting and bleak atmosphere this style of music is supposed to create. Also it covers some limitations in songwriting and playing ability these bands usually have. The bad part is it causes some instruments to not be heard correctly. While
some may argue that isn’t important, it certainly hinders some enjoyment you could get if everything was heard properly. The main offender here is the drums. When they can be heard, it is a very annoying “duk, duk, duk” sound. When they can’t, which is often, it just throws everything else off slightly. On the good side is that the recording has a very hypnotic sound, much like Burzum. It just repeats the same few riffs over and over. You can put this on repeat multiple times, and not really notice. The only real changes is the fast to slow parts, which appear, and are fairly common to this style of black metal. They are pretty generic, but nowhere near bad, as they are well done. I also have to give credit to Meyna’ch for the vocal performance, they are really tortured sounding, even understandable at times. Overall, this album is a good example of raw, old school black metal. While certainly not essential, it is worth seeking out if you are a fan of the genre.
