The name Mysto Dysto was taken from the ‘Loco Box’ distortion effect pedal. The pedal got really bad reviews in all magazines, the sounds was called rotten and the quality of the pedal bad. Their only album starts off like an unstoppable speed metal assault, then casually drives things off into a distant traditional road, followed by a destructive thrash attack and it doesn’t come close to stopping there. Song after song its nothing but sheer intensity and incomparable originality. Mysto Dysto is hands down one of those oddly awesome bands that somehow managed to master all sorts of genre’s of metal, play them and incorporate each and every style together as one. Nothing sounds out of place here and despite how diverse the music is, it all sounds utterly natural and flawless. One element that does however stay very consistent here is the speed and virtuosity. At nearly every instant they’re nearing ludicrous speed and never letting go, making it seem like playing at Agent Steel’s speed was common and easy to perform for anyone out there. Though above all, the guitarwork will leave you in awe after each and every song. This includes the endless build-ups that sometimes never seem to end and yet they just keep getting heavier, faster, and just downright crazier. While musically beyond perfection, there are still a few minor slip ups here. The production could definitely be a little better and the drums aren’t nearly as heavy as they should be, as the double bass deems itself as quite a weakling and hardly stands out, but compared to just about anything else out there in the mid 80’s this is still extremely enjoyable and there’s not much to really complain about. Vocalist Peter Meijering may also be another factor that strays listeners away, though after a few tracks he really does sink his teeth into you and it just doesn’t seem like they could have had it any other way. Its worth noting his vocals on the first track are also among his highest and not nearly as diverse as they are on the later tracks. He’s very melodic, clear, and throws out a ton of high notes along with an odd range that doesn’t really seem to have any boundaries of any sort. But, he just may be one of those vocalists you have to give some time before you make your final judgement on them. Throw these guys up there with Slauter Xstroyes and Realm (US), as you just simply cannot classify Mysto Dysto under a single genre or style. From death to power to speed to traditional, its all here and perfectly crafted into a one of a kind relic.
