South Shiles Nwobhm act that were influenced by Black Sabbath and so called first generation ‘heavy rock’ groups. At the tail end of the 1970’s Mythra was swimming against the Punk rock tide to satisfy the legions of rock fans in the North East of England who didn’t subscribe to the claim that Heavy Metal was dead. When other bands called it a day, Mythra, with their youthful arrogance, decided to take a leaf out of the ‘New Wave’ book and release their own record, the self financed EP’ Death And Destiny’. This ep registered their claim to a place in the Nwobhm Hall Of Fame. It was produced by Terry Gavaghan and released through Durham based Guardian Records in 1979. It was soon re-pressed by Street Beat records with a picture cover on both 7” and 12” and within just three weeks the band had sold an incredible 20 000 copies. The only promotion they got was through Geoff Bartons weekly ‘Sounds’ magazine and his recommendation kept ‘Death And Destiny’ in the alternative chart for 12 weeks. Mythra were also acknowledged by Lars Ulrich as an early Metallica influence, compare the style of Death and Destiny with ‘Kill ‘Em All’. In 1998 these master reels were found on a dusty shelve in Durham featuring 13 tracks recorded by Mythra in 1980. The master reels didn’t indicate any song titles so when British Steel records released this album they mis-labelled a number of songs, ‘Paradise’ actually being ‘New Life’, ‘Death Of A Loved One’ in reality being ‘Together Forever’ and ‘Blue Acid’ a wrongly quoted ‘W.A.S.A.’. However this 13 tracks proves what an outstanding band Mythra really were and if you check out their history you will find that they also were one of the first Nwobhm acts out there. Buy, sit back and enjoy the listening of this historical piece of music made by this legendary band
