Description

Black vinyl with poster and gatefold cover

Even though Noctum is considered occult rock by the label, I don’t think I would personally consider them a rock band. Well, not completely. These guys basically utilize many of the same riffs that Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath have used throughout the years (with a slight fusion of rock), but I would certainly classify them in the realms of classic metal, or at least occult hard rock. What I’m trying to say is Noctum make a very heavy sort of music, no matter what you want to call it. But I will certainly say that it’s not something I haven’t already heard before, as it reminds me an awful lot of Ghost and the bands that inspired them. (Hint: I’ve already named them.) However, that’s not to say that these guys didn’t craft a good occult rock/metal disc, because I can certainly say that the riffs thunder with the spirit of Sabbath and the solos definitely whirl about like we’d expect from Mercyful Fate. Each and every track on the album has a very grim feeling to it, just as you might expect – but there are also handfuls of thick melody that occasionally run into groove. The frontman uses a howling clean approach, much in the vein of another well-respected vocalist, and it is soon enough that I am under the impression that these guys might be trying just a bit too hard to follow in Ghost’s footsteps (even though the shoes of Papa Emeritus II are probably rather tough to fill). I will say that fans of Ghost and other occult rock acts in that vein will most certainly eat up Noctum, with songs like “Liberty In Death” and “The Revisit” being strong indications. So whether they’re just occult rock or a throwback to classic metal, Noctum are certainly worth checking out and I’ve certainly found their act truly catchy and well worth a listen. There’s potential here, but they’re no Ghost. At least, not yet…
