Description

2015 picture disc re-issue with cover and lyric insert

Nothing Sacred, for the unitiated, were a heavy metal group from Melbourne, Australia, who existed for the most part of the 1980s. Their music, although is getting harder to find today, still has a pretty widespread cult following in Australia and some parts of the world. Some members of Nothing Sacred later joined the early line-up of Aussie thrash legends Hobbs’ Angel Of Death. The band’s first studio release, the “Deathwish” EP, was released in 1985. In short, the band have a very strong melodic metal sound, unfortunately tainted by production issues. Without using too many genre categorisations, the music is too heavy to be called “power metal”, but too melodic to be called “thrash”. Frontman Mick Burnham has a powerful voice that sounds like a cross between Paul Di’anno and Joey Belladonna. But other than that, I can’t really compare the band’s sound to anyone else. The EP opens up with “No Rest”, which has a catchy chugging riff and some impressive vocal work from Burnham. The rhythm section of Karl Lean (bass) and Sham Littleman (drums) is as tight as ever. Out of the four tracks on the entire EP, this is one of two standout songs. The other, the third track “Deathwish”, is another killer song, beginning in the walking-pace tempo before plunging into some speed metal goodness in the middle section, with killer solos from guitarists Mark Woolley and Richard Snape. The other two songs – the slower second track “Old Man” doesn’t deliver quite as much justice, yet the ending track “The Curse” ends the EP on a high note, leaving the listener yearning for more. This is an essential listening for lovers of obscure old school metal.

Track list:
