An eclectic, female-fronted extreme metal unit based out of Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium, Oathbreaker draws from a deep well of inspiration, skillfully incorporating elements of screamo, post-punk, shoegaze, sludge, and black metal. Their 2013 album Eros|Anteros is a surprisingly hardcore record that seems to be too casually lumped in with the new wave of “hipster black metal” or even into the blackgaze movement. What Eros provides is hardcore punk with discordant and black metal influences, leagues apart from Deafheaven, Alcest or Wolves in the Throne Room, perhaps the same in spirit but little in common beyond black metal elements from a musical sense. Lyrically the album focuses on isolation and despair, mentions of fading hope and trying to see the light make their way into more than one track.
