Opera IX are a symphonic black metal band formed in Italy in 1988 by guitarist Ossian. Their first recording came on the 1990 demo tape ‘Gothik’ whilst a stable line-up was being gathered, before their debut album ‘The Call of the Wood’ was released in 1995. Opera IX were always more than a straight-forward black metal band, mixing elements of thrash and death metal with prominent symphonic elements; even folk influences were apparent on some songs. The band was known for their strong occult themes on earlier releases which gradually became focused around topics of paganism.
