Pain is an industrial music project that serves as a creative outlet for famed Swedish heavy metal producer Peter Tagtgren. Here Tagtgren shows how talented he is when he’s able to change from Hypocrisy’s death metal to this dark melodic music, with a considerable amount of electronic background and practically being behind every instrument. This album is not so heavy as the others, there is no aggressive vocals, Peter’s only using clean vocals here. I think this project was founded with this purpose, to break the boundaries of Metal and take it to another level and reach new audiences. The album has some nice keyboards and even a 16 string orchestra in a couple tracks. The first single ‘Shut Your Mouth’ is a very good and catchy song, and there’s an interesting video for this track, it was a perfect choice for the first single, since I’ve heard that song for the first time, the melody keeps hammering in my head. ‘Just Hate Me’ is the second single and it’s a slow and emotional song. Peter isn’t someone that likes to do the same thing over and over and Pain is probably for some a) a disappointment in the opinion of some Hypocrisy fans b) a freedom of creativity in the opinion of some others , c) a commercial compromise, d) something else. Whatever purpose Tagtgren has with Pain its still very clear that he can sing, play and produce more than just Death Metal. It’s really worth buying.
