Dynamo Open Air was a festival in the Netherlands held (almost) every year since 1986, until 2005. Originally held to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Dynamo rock club in Eindhoven, it has grown exponentially since then, and from a 5,000-person attendance in the Dynamo parking lot, it had grown to over 110,000 attendees in 1995. However, this caused too much pressure on the Dutch infrastructure, and the festival had to shrink to a maximum of 60,000 visitors for 1996. From there it went downhill, mostly because the festival could not find a permanent venue. The 1998 festival was held on the 29th to 31st of May and it featured tons of great hardrock and heavy metal acts. Among the bands that played during these three days we find Agnostic Front, Atrocity, Bewitched, Blind Guardian, Cathedral, Covenant, Death, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Enslaved, Fates Warning, Hammerfall, Helloween, Iced Earth, Immortal, In Flames, Kreator, Orange Goblin, Primal Fear, Pro-Pain, Saxon, Soulfly, Spiritual Beggars, Strapping Young Lad, Stratovarius, Theatre of Tragedy, Within Temptation and Pantera. Pantera had just finished a 6 date tour through Chile, Argentina and Brazil when they flew in to start their European leg of the tour that would take them through several major festivals in Europe during May and June of 1998. Pantera were set to play at the Dynamo Open Air on the 30th of May and they went through a set list that mostly consisted of hits but they also performed Hard Lines Sunken Cheeks that were one of the surprises of the day. The band were tight and the set list were good but Phil Anselmo obviously have had a little to much fun backstage before the show and his drunken conversation and singing style makes it a bit of a letdown for the casual listener while the die hard fan probably see it as a collectable and special appearance.
