Pat Benatar’s second effort is a triumph of sorts. While she broke from the star power of Australian/ British producer Mike Chapman and his stable, she and her band managed to pull off a generally good approximation of what made her debut so great under his control. Crimes Of Passion taps the general moodiness of 1979’s In The Heat Of The Night but reduces the sultriness of that record in favour of a more consistently energetic rock approach. She also swapped to Keith Olsen (Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, The Grateful Dead) whose production was colder and less textured than Chapman’s and generally more American in sensibility. Apart from Benatar’s powerful vocals, this album, far more than its predecessor, is a major showcase for the guitar talents of her partner, Neil Geraldo and the awesome drumming of Myron Grombacher. These three elements are the driving backbone of the record and make it an onslaught of sorts. Further, this time round the band members step up to the song-writing table, contributing six out of the ten tracks. These are among the best songs of the set, and some, of her career. The obvious showstopper is the wrenching hard rocker, Hell Is For Children, a dramatic and heartfelt career highlight about the outrage of child abuse. And then we have one of her most well-known song of her career, Hit Me With Your Best Shot. This is a very worthy successor to her debut.
