Passion is a joyous, majestic album, and works on so many levels.

Pendragon formed in 1978 and over the past 30-odd years have built up a fanatical fanbase around the world, releasing 8 albums along with countless EPs, live and mini-albums. When the band returned with their album Passion it was hailed by Classic Rock Prog as ‘an album that has both verve and real panache’. Like many fans of this band, I was probably guilty of wanting everything to sound like their ‘Not Of This World’ era, and indeed that wonderful album itself. But that’s hardly progressive is it… At first, I just thought of it as a straightforward heavy rock album – nothing wrong in that of course, but I expected more. But then repeated listening have undoubtedly revealed much more subtlety and depth. Guitar player Nick Barrett has so many layers with his textures, chords, lead lines (often continuing behind the vocals), and of course the solos, are just beautiful, and soar with such emotion. All Pendragon fans (and all rock/prog fans) should open their minds and embrace everything this great album has to offer. Yes the music has moved on from Not Of This World, but you WILL be rewarded big time. It may take time, but you will. In my experience, albums that reveal their charms gradually, are the ones I still play and love many years after I first hear them. Passion is firmly on that list.
