It seems more often lately that the “Supergroup” is a PR-spun creation (often recorded separately – rather than all together) in the hope that sales and Downloads will keep paying the bills. Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian Live album, recorded at Zepp in Tokyo on the 14th of November, is NOT! The real proof is when you bring together the top talent in the genre and show how they do in a live environment. Drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, The Winery Dogs, Transatlantic), bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth), guitarist Tony MacAlpine and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion, Dream Theater, Billy Idol). This 95 minute concert showcases a wide range of instrumental performances from each of the members careers and collaborations. Included in the set are Shy Boy from Sheehan’s band Talas, MacAlpine’s The Stranger, Sherinian’s Apocalypse 1470 B.C. and Dream Theater’s A Change Of Seasons: The Crimson Sunrise. Certainly any of these artists could perform a show as a unique and individual artist (and have) – but together is where the real magic takes over.
