First Recordings is a compilation of miscellaneous early work by Austrian death/grind legends Pungent Stench. Here you have the debut demo Mucous Secretion from 1988 which pretty much is a rehearsal recording with a noisy sound quality so you better enjoy these in the re-recorded versions that can be found on the split EP with Disharmonic Orchestra or the debut album For God Your Soul. However Festered Offals has never been re-recorded. The song Extreme Deformity is a longer and well thought through composition with a lengthy but brilliant opening before plunging into raging death metal territory. Also worth mention is Embalmed In Sulphuric Acid which is one of the fastest and most brutal songs from their oldest days. The split EP with Disharmonic Orchestra features 4 newly penned tracks that shows that the band still had their emphasis on speed and dirtiness. It only takes 16 minutes before you have gone through this EP. The Extreme Deformity EP is a classic. The title track can be described as the ‘Hell Awaits’ of death metal. A lengthy intro with various breaks, rhythm and differentiating riffs before plunging into a raging song. The B-side of the single features the song Molecular Disembowelment, where Pungent Stench gives a middle finger to all corporate rock acts who play too many solos in their music. Each Pungent Stench member gives a ‘solo’ on the intro of this song and especially the vocal ‘solo’ and the distorted noise called a ‘bass solo’ are memorable. All in all in you’re into early Pungent Stench or even in death metal in general, be sure to check this out!
